In 2001, Daisuke Hamaguchi kickstarted Number76 in Minami Aoyama, Tokyo. Originally named HairStyleShop NALU, it was his brainchild to create a salon resembling a style shop, where clients could effortlessly switch up their hairstyles just like changing fashion items.

The name “NALU” derived from Hawaiian, meaning “waves,” reflecting Hamaguchi’s passion for surfing and his intention to ride and create trends. Two years later, in 2003, NALU relocated to Omotesando, coinciding with the birth of 76CAFE.

This innovative concept combined a café on the ground floor with a hair salon in the basement, offering customers a unique experience. This blend of coffee culture and hairstyling quickly gained traction, turning 76CAFE into a hotspot in the trendy Omotesando district.

The seamless integration of these two distinct concepts attracted customers and set a new standard in the salon industry. Number76’s journey from its humble beginnings to becoming a staple in the stylish district underscores its commitment to creativity, trendsetting, and customer satisfaction, making it a symbol of contemporary hair fashion.

What customers say:

Nicole Yong:

My first time here was done by Adam. He was very friendly and provided sound advice on styling and care. He was attentive to my concerns about having thin hair and was glad the results came out beautifully. I got a haircut again today with him and will continue to get my hair done here soon.

Nur Ashiqin:

After my hair was ruined entirely by another salon (I have never experienced extreme breakage before, but this salon gave it to me), I walked in this morning without an appointment and explained my problem to Yoshi. The team was kind and patient and provided me with a consultation on the spot.

FAQs

What is the best way to care for coloured hair?

Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, avoid hot water, and use colour-protecting treatments to maintain colour vibrancy and prevent fading.

How often should I get a haircut?

It depends on your hair type and desired style. Generally, getting a trim every 6-8 weeks helps maintain healthy hair and style.

Can hair extensions damage my natural hair?

Hair extensions shouldn’t damage your hair if installed and cared for properly. It’s essential to follow proper maintenance and removal techniques.

How can I prevent frizz in my hair?

Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, a smoothing serum or cream, and avoid over-drying hair with hot tools to minimise frizz.

What’s the difference between highlights and balayage?

Highlights involve lightening strands of hair uniformly, while balayage creates a natural, sun-kissed effect by hand-painting colour onto sections of hair.

How can I treat a dry scalp?

Use a moisturising shampoo, avoid hot water, and massage the scalp with nourishing oils like coconut or jojoba oil to alleviate dryness and itchiness.

Can I style my hair every day?

It’s best to limit heat styling to prevent damage. Use heat-protectant products and alternate between styles to minimise stress on hair.

How long does a perm or rebonding treatment last?

Perms typically last 2-6 months, depending on hair type and maintenance. Rebonding can last up to 6 months or longer with proper care.

Is it normal to lose hair every day?

Losing about 50-100 hairs daily is expected as part of the hair’s natural growth cycle. Excessive hair loss may indicate an underlying issue.

Can I colour my hair if it’s damaged?

It’s best to wait until your hair is healthier before colouring to avoid further damage. Consult with a professional stylist for personalised advice.
